Camper's Log - May 2, 2005

Dear Fans,

After my brother and sister-in-law (SIL) got back from Hawaii, they were in SF for one day until heading back east. Given the significant problems with the rental car experience (mostly getting lost), we decided not to have one.

As SIL is 7 months pregnant, walking around too much wasn't an option. So we devised a:

Low Impact Tour of San Francisco

  1. Take the 22 Fillmore bus to Haight and Fillmore ($1.25). The bus was filled with ghetto trash talking about which rehab program they're in now. Brother and SIL didn't understand the ebonics of it all, so I had to fill them in.
  2. Eat breakfast at Squat and Gobble ($8 each). The place is empty but the graffitti on the bathroom entertains the tourists.
  3. Take the 71 Haight bus to 19th Avenue (free with transfer). On the way, enjoy a scenic view of Upper and Lower Haight. The bus was filled with geriatric Asian ladies and hipsters.
  4. Walk to Stow Lake. Rent a surry bike ($30). Bike around Golden Gate Park for an hour, which we found was harder than it looks. We made SIL pedal on the hills.
  5. Rent a row boat and paddle around Stow Lake ($13). We were deciding between a paddle boat and a canoe and when SIL objected to Bro's choice, he said, "Come on, you're pretty much just ballast either way." Zinger!
  6. Walk back to 19th Avenue and take the N-Judah ($1.25) to Ocean Beach. The N-Judah was filled with Sunset District Asian people and tourists like us.
  7. Walk to the Park Chalet and have an overpriced beer and light lunch outdoors($25 each). Make mental note to just get beer next time.
  8. Walk back to the N-Judah (free with old transfer) and take it home. As we went along, the train filled with Indian, Asian, black, French, British, gay and straight passengers. Feel good about the diversity in SF for a change.
  9. Switch to the 22-Fillmore (free with old transfer) and take it back home to the ghetto. Watch out for syringes!
